Remember to Always Signal – Using your signals is the only way to communicate with other drivers on the road since no one on the road can read your mind and vice versa. Always use your turn signals at least 5 seconds in advance to let drivers know you are going to make a move.

Don’t Follow Too Closely – Maintain some distance between your car and the car ahead of you in order to allow yourself enough response time in case the car ahead makes a sudden turn or stop. You should maintain at least a 4 second gap. 

Take Regular Breaks  – Long-distance driving has a way of diminishing your attentiveness. It is recommended to take regular breaks to refresh your mind when you’re driving long distance and even more so if you’re driving at night.

Plan Ahead – On a long-distance drive it is in your best interest to take some time to get familiar with your route and gather information on where you are going. This also involves planning your route and plotting alternative routes using your GPS, checking the weather reports, and figuring out where you can stop for food, gas, and more.
